Monday 19th November, 14:00 - 16:00
Committee Room 19, House of Commons, Palace of Westminster

UPDATE - This event has now been moved from the Jubilee Room and will now take place in Committee Room 19.

As Britain moves to a smarter, more flexible energy system, new technologies can be used to help improve energy efficiency and lower energy costs for consumers. Smarter housing could also play a big role in balancing our energy system and helping to reduce energy demand and fuel poverty. New technologies, new business models and digitalisation are opening up new possibilities for how electricity can be dispatched across the system to the point and time at which it is needed.

The government's Smart Systems and Flexibility Plan highlighted that, currently, there is little demand-side response from households or small businesses, but trials to date show that there is significant technical potential in these areas as well as consumer appetite to explore new services coming forward. Government and Ofgem have committed to put in place enablers that could unlock this market and work is already underway through a number of areas including Ofgem's Significant Code Review, the government's response to is consultation on smart appliances, and the Automated and Electric Vehicles Act.

PRASEG's 'Smart Homes and the UK Energy System: Empowering 21st Century Consumers' event will examine the role of new technologies and new business models, and how these can empower the consumers of the 21st Century.

Speakers are set to include:

  • Dr Alan Whitehead MP - Vice Chair, PRASEG
  • Clementine Cowton - Director of External Affairs, Octopus Energy
  • Chris Hewett - Chief Executive, Solar Trade Association
  • Dhara Vyas - Head of Future Energy Services, Citizens Advice
  • Maria McKavanagh - Chief Operating Officer, Verv Energy
